Drummer and vocalist Ronnie “Groove” Smith is a native of the Oakland/East Bay area in northern CA. His talents were influenced & developed growing up in the Bay Area’s rich musical legacy. His roots began in the pentecostal church singing and playing drums for groups/choirs. Later as he developed, he started singing and recording with emerging local gospel groups/artists like James Mitchell, Lawrence Mathews, and Agapé feat. Alfreda Lyons Campbell; and also playing and recording drums for gospel quartet groups like The Sons of the Soul Revivers, The Gospel Hummingbirds, Leonard Lothlen & Infinity, The Soulful Sons of Zion, and The Jones Boys.
Outside of gospel music, Ronnie has been very active in the Bay Area’s music scene over the years playing in a variety of styles from Blues, RnB, Hip-hop, Jazz, Americana and Roots music! He was a Blues Music Award winning drummer in 2010 for his work with the Tommy Castro Band and has gone on to work with many nationally and internationally known blues artists in the genre. Some of the blues artists he’s performed, toured, and recorded with are Joe Louis Walker, Kim Wilson, Vanessa Collier, Matt Schofield, Debbie Davies, Kenny Neal, Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, Aki Kumar, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Bernard Allison, Janiva Magness, Bob Corritore, Junior Watson, Darrell Nulisch, Sonny Green, John Nemeth, John Primer, Henry Gray, Rip Lee Pryor, Sista Monica, and Ron Hacker. Also, Ronnie has done quite a bit of session work for Jim Pugh’s Little Village Foundation label at Greaseland Studios; as well as with Jon Atkinson’s BigTone Records, and producer Paul Tillman Smith.
Some of Ronnie’s other accomplishments outside of the blues world has been to perform and/or record with such notable artists/musicians as Ledisi, Goapele, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian, Linda Tillery, Jubu Smith & Legally Blynd, Chris Burger & Luv Phenomena, Jungle Biskit, Tony Lindsay, Spang A Lang, Mike Marshall, Lloyd Gregory, Lydia Pense & Coolblood, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Barry Finnerty, Jon Hammond, Carl Lockett, Stefanie Keys, Johnny Talbot, John Turk, Jesse James, Freddie Hughes, Bobbie Reed, and Leah Tysse.
Currently he has been touring with veteran Blues guitar master and Alligator Records artist, Chris Cain; and Blues/Soul singer and Little Village Foundation artist, Alabama Mike; and still performs with 7x Grammy nominated artist, Roots music Queen, Maria Muldaur!
